Binnie Held Beckerman
What began in the quiet halls of a Brooklyn library, mesmerized by the flowing forms of Rodin, evolved into a lifelong devotion to material and memory.
Between the physical endurance required to carve stone and the exhilaration of applying thick oil paint, my sculpture and painting is a joyous act of discovery, a deeply felt response to the luminous landscapes of my surroundings.
After settling on the East End of Long Island in 1979, painting took hold of my creative impulses. I was pulled forward by the water, light, and trees of Sag Harbor. Years of expressive landscape work gradually gave way to a personal language of rhythmic abstraction: rich layers of oil, complex color relationships, and movement built almost without pause, over many months.
Trees, water and clouds, sunsets, emotions and orchestral music, remain my constant and eternal subjects.
Surrounded by the extraordinary landscapes and luminous light of Sag Harbor, a personal language of rhythmic abstraction emerged. Rich layers of oil paint and complex color relationships create works filled with vibrant and dynamic and impassioned energy.

Browse ArtworksStone sculpture has stayed with me since college, and later through years of study across New York and Long Island with American and Italian artists. The process is slow by nature: finding the form the material is already offering, then patiently refining each surface until it reaches its final state.
That sense of discovery, the same one I felt as a child, when tracing the photographs of Rodin’s The Kiss at that Brooklyn library has never diminished.

“Your work is quite lovely… Is it abstract or illusionistic? It feels like what would have happened if the Pattern People went a step further into abstraction.”
“These paintings operate like living systems—dense, rhythmic fields in which color, gesture, and line continually reorganize themselves. Binnie brings muscular confidence to the surface while preserving mystery and openness, creating work that feels at once elemental, atmospheric, and deeply alive.”
"Binnie Held Beckerman’s new abstract paintings possess the ebb and flow of a symphony. A palpable sense of music moves through her gesture, from arm to brush to canvas. These new works have extraordinary energy and a deeply felt personal sense of color.”
"Primarily self taught, Binnie Beckerman has been able to produce some compelling abstract paintings. They are filled with color and light that appear to rhythmically dance across the surface with buoyancy and energy."
"Binnie Beckerman is a wonderful colorist. Each of her paintings achieves a richly worked color harmony and inventive material unity."
My artistic journey began at the age of five at sleepaway camp. I spent most of the summer in the arts and crafts shack. At summer's end, I proudly sent home a clay ashtray I had lovingly shaped. When it arrived shattered, thus began my lifelong love-hate relationship with clay.
As a child, visiting our Brooklyn public library was always a joy. I discovered a small volume filled with photographs of Auguste Rodin's The Kiss. I was captivated, mesmerized by the flowing forms and timeless beauty of the sculpture.
After moving to the East End of Long Island in 1979, I turned my focus to painting. Surrounded by extraordinary landscapes, water views, and luminous light, I found endless inspiration.
This body of work emerged in an exhilarating creative burst. Rich layers of oil paint, complex color relationships, and rhythmic movement combine to create works filled with energy, emotion, and depth.
